Cancellations and Missed Appointments

Your first appointment is taken very seriously as ample time is set aside to get to know you, answer questions and discuss treatment options. If you no-show for that first appointment, you have taken time that may have been used to provide care for other patients and will not be able to reschedule — you will need to find care at another psychiatric practice.

All office visits are by appointment only. Unless your follow-up appointment has been scheduled for you during your session, it is your responsibility to schedule (and reschedule as necessary) follow-up appointments through the patient portal. Outside of exceptional circumstances, where you are unable to access the patient portal or use email, please do not call the clinic for appointment inquiries, changes, or cancellations.

Cancellations and rescheduling of follow-up appointments should be made at least 24 business hours in advance (Friday for a Monday appointment) by email or through the patient portal. Failure to do so will result in additional charges as follows:

  • First late cancellation (less than 24 hours in advance): $40
  • Every late cancellation thereafter: $90
  • First Missed Appointment: $90
  • Every Missed Appointment thereafter: $180

Fees for missed appointments and late cancellation are not covered by insurance. They will be automatically billed to your on-file credit card.

Medication Refills:

We make every effort to ensure that you will have enough medication until your next follow-up. The most common reason for difficulties refilling daily medications is that the pharmacy is attempting to request additional refills on an old prescription. They may tell you that:

  • you don’t have any refills left
  • your provider needs to authorize more refills
  • we have faxed a refill request to your provider

If you have not missed any appointments, please call the pharmacy to ensure that they are not overlooking your new electronic script while automatically trying to authorize refills. You can ask your pharmacist if there are any prescriptions on file. For your safety, we will not fill prescriptions requests sent by your pharmacy, including phone calls and faxes.

If you had to reschedule your appointment and think that you will be in danger of running out of your medications prior to your next scheduled appointment, please message Dr. Borue through the patient portal 7-10 DAYS BEFORE YOU RUN OUT OF MEDICATION. Please include the information listed below in your message. A refill will be sent to your pharmacy within 1-2 business days of your request. Please do not call Dr. Borue regarding refill requests outside of a truly urgent situation.

  • Name and dose of medication
  • Pharmacy name and phone number
  • Please note that some pharmacies do not allow for the electronic transmission of controlled substance prescriptions. If you know that your pharmacy does not accept electronic medications that can be called into the pharmacy, please also include your mailing address.

Medications requiring prior authorization from your insurance:

Pharmacies are notoriously unreliable at contacting your provider regarding the need for prior authorizations. If you are informed by your pharmacy that authorization is necessary for them to fill your script, please message Dr. Borue through the patient portal. Please include the information listed below in your message. If you are unsure of your insurance information, the pharmacy can typically assist you in locating it.

  • Name of your insurance carrier
  • Your insurance group number (if applicable)
  • Your member number
  • Name and dose of medication for which you are needing the authorization
  • Pharmacy name and phone number

Outside of truly urgent situations, please do not call Dr. Borue regarding routine authorizations. We will process the request and submit the appropriate paperwork within 1-2 business days of receiving your email. For routine requests, it can take up to 2 days for your insurance company to authorize the medication.

We will typically discuss the need for prior authorization for select medications at your appointment. Unfortunately, due to the way that insurance claims are structured, we are unable to submit for a prior authorization for your medication prior to your pharmacy attempting to fill the script. Occasionally, your authorizations will expire and will need to be re-submitted for you. Once the pharmacy attempts to fill your script, they will inform you if your medications requires authorization.
